Where is Piazza Napoleone located?

Piazza Napoleone is located in the historic centre of Lucca, within the Renaissance city walls that encircle the town for 4.2 km.

The Palazzo Ducale borders the square and is centrally located to other famous landmarks in Lucca, like the Teatro del Giglio. Its rectangular layout and size make it one of the largest open spaces in Lucca, which is a rare find as the city is iconically full of narrow medieval streets.

What is the historical significance of the Piazza Napoleone?

The piazza has a lot of historical significance for Lucca. It began in the 14th century, when Castruccio Castracani constructed the Augusta Fortress in 1322. This established the area as a military and political stronghold. However, in 1370, the citizens of Lucca demolished most of the fortress as a protest against centralised power.

Later, during the Napoleonic era between 1805 and 1814, Napoleon’s sister, Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, who ruled Lucca as Princess, turned the space into an open square and named it after her brother. Finally, in the 19th century, the monument to Maria Luisa di Borbone, who was the Duchess of Lucca, was installed at the centre in 1843.

Today, Piazza Napoleone showcases all the layers of its history.
