Where is Viareggio, and why you need to visit?
Viareggio is a lovely seaside town on the northwestern coast of Tuscany. It’s located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apuan Alps. Viareggio is 20 km from Lucca and around 30 km from Pisa, making Viareggio easily accessible by train. It’s a convenient base for exploring Tuscany or a day trip within the region. Viareggio’s long stretch of beach is along the Versilia coastline and is famous for its sandy shores and fabulous seaside resorts.
But did you know that Viareggio was one of Italy’s first man-made beach destinations? Originally developed in the early 19th century, wealthy Tuscan families began constructing villas in the Art Nouveau style. This area later became a popular tourist destination for locals and international visitors. Known as the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea”, Viareggio has an iconic promenade that is full of architectural heritage and is a must-see when in the area.
The best beaches in Viareggio for a perfect holiday
Viareggio has over 10 kilometres of stunning golden sand beaches that run along the Tyrrhenian Sea. This makes Viareggio one of the best beach destinations in Tuscany. Its continuous shoreline is lined with over 100 bagni (private beach clubs) that offer sunbeds and umbrellas to beachside restaurants, changing rooms, and even swimming pools. There is a wide variety of bagnis options, from luxurious and exclusive to family-friendly choices.
Some of the most popular beach clubs are Bagno Maurizio. Widely popular for its friendly service and clean, well-maintained facilities, tourists and locals often visit it. If you want something more luxurious and ideal for couples, Bagno Amedea is a more upscale experience with elegant loungers and a chic bar. While Bagno Irene has a more central location with excellent dining options, perfect for families or groups of friends.
Please make sure to book your spot at one of these private beach clubs ahead of time, especially in July and August, as they can fill up quickly. Average entrance fees run around €30 per person but include a sunbed and access to the sea and swimming pool.
If you prefer to avoid the private beach clubs and want something more natural, Spiaggia della Lecciona is a nearby untamed beach. It is free to enter and is part of the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Natural Park, a protected area with pine forests and sand dunes. There are no services here, but you have beautiful views and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Top attractions: Promenades, parks, and cultural spots
Enjoying your holidays in Viareggio Italy, is more than just sitting on a beach. You can explore culture, history, and amazing cuisine. We suggest starting with La Passeggiata, the town’s iconic seaside promenade. It stretches over 3 kilometres and is lined with elegant Art Nouveau buildings, shops, outdoor cafes, and classic Italian gelaterias. At night, the promenade is full of live music and cocktail bars.
Just a short walk inland is the Museo del Carnevale di Viareggio. As we mentioned before, Viareggio is world-famous for its Carnival celebration. Found in the Cittadella del Carnevale complex, the museum gives you a deeper look into the history of Carnival and the art of papier-mâché float-making. You can see costumes, original masks and float designs dating back to 1873!
Next, we recommend heading to Villa Paolina. This is a neoclassical residence that once belonged to Paolina Bonaparte, the sister of Napoleon. Today, it’s used as a gallery, with rotating art and photography exhibits.
Finally, relax in Pineta di Ponente, a large pine forest park that runs parallel to the beach. It’s great for late afternoon strolls, offering shady walking and cycling paths, children’s playgrounds, and picnic areas. There are bike rentals, mini-golf, and snack bars nearby, perfect for family-friendly Viareggio holidays.
