A Tuscany wine tour is always a good idea

What better way to combine two of the finest things that Italy has to offer – Tuscany and the incredible wines produced there. Famous for the beauty of its landscapes, amazing food culture and beautiful cities such as Florence and Pisa with their priceless artistic and cultural heritage, this region is a paradise for a long list of reasons, with wine right up there. The region’s historic vineyards and reverence for their world-class wines are second to none.

Tuscany's Wine Tours

Whether you designate a driver and head out in the car, swing by the enotecas, or go directly to the wineries themselves, there are some fabulous options throughout the Tuscany region.

Chianti

The perfect location to begin exploring the wines of Tuscany, Chianti is world-renowned for its wines and is one of the first names that springs to mind when thinking of Tuscan tipples. With its signature Sangiovese-based wines, which include Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva, you can relax, unwind and explore charming villages like Greve, Radda, and Castellina whilst visiting their wineries.

Wine has been produced in this area since Etruscan times, over 2,000 years ago. A rich ruby red in colour, with floral notes and a dry, sapid flavour, this is a classic.

Brunello di Montalcino

After the delights of Chianti, it could be time to head south to the rolling hills of Montalcino to sample the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino selection. There are some fabulous wineries in the area, along with the charming historical town of Montalcino itself, with its narrow, cobbled streets and ancient architecture.

Made from the Sangiovese Grosso grape, the main difference between the Brunello and Chianti is that the Brunello is always made from 100% Sangiovese, while a regular Chianti can contain up to 30% of other grapes. Brunellos are darker in colour and tend to be more tannic, age-worthy, and complex than Chianti wines, which means they also tend to be understandably pricier than their Chianti cousins.

Montepulciano

Next stop is the stunning Medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano, full of Renaissance palaces and inviting squares, not far from Siena. Known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, this is a truly excellent destination for visiting wineries and enjoying the elegant, complex red wines produced from the Sangiovese grape – this was also one of the first places in Italy to be awarded the denominazione di origine controllata (DOC).

The rich and textured history of Montepulciano is also that of its wines. Walking through the streets is to step back into history, and one of the beguiling aspects of wine tours in this area is the huge number of underground cellars. Many of them are located under some of the town’s fascinating historical buildings – a treat on so many levels.

Bolgheri

Heading west, the coastal region of Bolgheri is renowned for its “Super Tuscan” wines, which often blend Sangiovese with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. A relatively young example compared to other examples from this ancient land, the Bolgheri is nevertheless held in high esteem and is rich in colour, supple, yet extremely age-worthy.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

No Tuscany wine tour would be complete without a visit to the mediaeval town of San Gimignano, whose impressive skyline has lent it a fabulous new name – The Manhattan of the Middle Ages – great for climbing the historical towers and drinking in the incredible vistas. This stunning corner of Tuscany has miles of vines against beautiful rolling hills, and the town itself is replete with breathtaking art and architecture, the perfect backdrop for sampling this crisp, refreshing wine. This is the only Tuscan white that is DOCG, and is even name checked in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy!

Golden-hued in colour, full-bodied, headily floral and dry and with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste, this crisply refreshing wine is produced from grapes of the same name and is perfect for pairing with seafood dishes.

Val d'Orcia

The stunning Val d’Orcia region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for the stunning, unspoilt landscape, with its rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and, of course, vineyards. The landscape as it is now, is practically unchanged since the days it was set out by wealthy Siennese merchants in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Orcia is another relative newcomer – the local Sangiovese red grape, and Trebbiano, a white grape – thrive in the area, and they are the base for the wines produced under the Orcia Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status, having only received the denomination in 2000. As well as the wines here, the area is revered for its incredible food, especially extra virgin olive oil, white truffles, salumi, saffron and Pecorino cheeses, even more reason to book a tour!
