The Leaning Tower isn’t the only sight to see. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a beautiful Romanesque cathedral. Entry to the cathedral is free, but a ticket is required to visit the museum and other areas. It’s open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Baptistery is known for its acoustics and beautiful dome and is located in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Tickets cost €5, open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM. You can buy a combo entry pack for €15 which includes the Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo Museum and the Sinopie Museum.

Lucca

Lucca is an impressive city surrounded by Renaissance-era walls, which surprisingly have remained intact throughout the centuries. Inside these walls are many sights and important landmarks to visit.

The San Martino Cathedral is one of the first sights to visit while in Lucca. It is known for its exterior façade and stunning bell tower. Entrance is €3 for the cathedral and an additional €3 to access the bell tower. It’s open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM and Sundays from 12 PM to 6 PM.

The Guinigi Tower is a very special monument in Lucca because it mixes man-made architecture with natural influences as it has an ancient oak tree on top of it! You can climb the 230 steps to the top to see some stunning city views. Entry is €8 and it is open daily from 10 AM to 8:30 PM.

San Michele in Foro is a 12th-century church that is located in the heart of Lucca’s old town. It’s open from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Entry is free

Lastly, the City Walls is the real star of Lucca. The wall spans about 4 kilometres around the old town and is perfect for strolling around the city centre. You can access the wall for free and you can even rent bicycles at various points along the path.

Transport options between Lucca and Pisa

Luckily, getting to and from Pisa and Lucca is easy. Here are some options to get from Pisa to Lucca:

Car

Driving from Pisa to Lucca is straightforward and offers beautiful scenic views. Travel between the two cities is approximately 23 kilometres and takes about 30 minutes via the SS12 highway.

You can rent a car in Pisa to fit your needs and group size while driving. It also gives you the flexibility to explore nearby cities and attractions while en route.

Train

Travelling by train is the most convenient, cheapest and popular option. Trenitalia has frequent services between Pisa Centrale and Lucca. Travel time is about 30 minutes and tickets only cost between €3 – €5. There is a train running approximately every hour and you can buy tickets at the station or online in advance if you prefer.

Taking the train offers comfort and peace of mind but doesn’t allow you to move outside of the two cities or be as flexible with timing.
